The Game

Far in the distant future, the human race has colonized a substantial part of the galaxy. Human nature has not changed, however, and the government is threatened by a cult of religious fanatics known as Mondites. Mondites believe in the wisdom of their leader, the "Prime Paragon", and in superseding normal evolution through technology. This goal is being actively pursued by the evil Dr. Mastaba. With the latest in biological and nano technology, unbounded enthusiasm, and what appears to be a 12" circular saw, he conducts his gruesome experiments at a secret Mondite base. To further complicate the plot, this base is located on a planet where the remains of a long-dead alien race have just been discovered. Archaeological research on the aliens is being done in parallel with the experiments. The goal of the experiments is to produce a half-human, half-cyborg assassin. Since the mortality rate so far has been 100%, experimental subjects have had to be kidnapped and imprisoned. This is where you come in.

The mood for the game is initially established through a 30-page Field Personnel File, which chronicles the arrival, disillusionment, and destruction of the base security officer. It is quite well written, and sets the tone admirably. On starting the game, you view an impressive opening sequence, in which your character is brought to the base, given the complete circular saw treatment without anesthetics, and thrown into a prison cell to recuperate. What luck! The mortality rate is now something less than 100%! Now all you have to do is escape, stop the evil experiments, and figure out who you are (since your memories were destroyed as part of the operation).

This was the high point of the game for me, because it was impossible to tell when the animated sequence ended and the actual game play began. BioForge is the first game I have seen where the graphical quality of an opening sequence continues throughout the game.
