With Battleground 9: Chickamauga, TalonSoft returns to the American Civil War for one last, encore release. This final title in the award winning Battleground series re-creates two western theatre Civil War conflicts -- the Battle of Murfreesboro (December 1862-January 1863) and the Battle of Chickamauga (September 1863). In both of these bloody and fiercely fought clashes the Union Army of the Cumberland, led by William Rosecrans, met the Confederate Army of Tennessee under General Braxton Bragg.
Using the same basic gameplay engine as the other eight titles in the series, Battleground 9: Chickamauga is a turn-based, hex grid war game that follows many of the conventions of traditional board war games. Each hexagon on the fully handcrafted battlefield map represents an area 125 yards wide, while each turn consists of 20 minutes during the day turn or one hour in at night. Of course, BGC offers the option of controlling either the Union or Confederate side at varying levels of command.
Those familiar with other Civil War titles in the Battleground series will find Chickamauga similar and easily accessible. As before, each game turn is composed of four phases (movement, offensive fire, defensive fire, and melee), during which the gamer can perform numerous functions such as moving units, firing, and conducting melee. New to the Civil War line are skirmishers, which can be deployed by infantry units during a movement phase, as well as a number of new optional rules to reflect the changing battle environments.
BGC also includes a variety of scenarios depicting both historically accurate situations and hypothetical "what if" variations. For experienced war gamers, both battles at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga can be re-enacted against an AI following historical tactics or alternative strategies, while newcomers are provided for with smaller scenarios focusing on key engagements of the conflicts.
